DNA Testing

Although Jack Russells tend to be very health dogs on general, some are affected by some very serious health conditons including blindness at an early age, seizures and ataxia.  Many of these serious health conditions are genetic.  The JRTCA has worked closely with the University of Missouri for years to develop DNA test for several diseases that occur in Jack Russell Terriers. As responsible breeders we utilize these tests to determine the DNA status for our terriers in order to help us make informed breeding decisions to eliminate the possibility of producing a puppy affected with one of these genetic conditions.

Health Screening

There are several health conditions that currently do not have DNA tests available which are believed to have a genetic component including deafness and several eye conditions.  We utilize CERF exams to screen our terriers for eye conditions and BAER testing to screen for hearing issues.

Advantage of a well established breeding program

The fact that our breeding program began in 1996 gives of years of experience and history to know about the health and longevity of our own terrier lines.  We have always been determined to only include terriers that are vigorous, healthy terriers that are free of allergies and other conditions that can exist in Jack Russells.  We feel very fortunate to have started with strong healthy terriers that lived long lives free of health problems.  We strive to produce that same type of sturdy terrier that makes owning a Legendary Terrier and enjoyable experience that can last for years.

Deuce is the perfect example of the health and longevity we strive for

Deuce has won several conformation championships and reserve championships at 10 and 11 years old against dogs in their prime.  Judges comment on his longevity, flexibility and quality of movement which is rare at such an advanced age.  He earned his bronze medallion and lifetime achievement award both at the age of 10 and continues to be an active terrier full of life and vigor as he ages.
